Carlo Gambino

Carlo Gambino, born in Palermo in 1902, became the boss whose name the Gambino crime family still carries, and across a criminal career spanning more than fifty years he built one of the most enduring Mafia organisations in American history. Emigrating to New York in 1921, he rose quietly through the ranks, and after the disastrous Apalachin meeting of 1957 and the imprisonment of Vito Genovese, he seized control of the Commission that governed organised crime. His empire ran on racketeering, loan sharking and the infiltration of labour unions. Discipline and a low profile kept him almost entirely out of prison: a single tax charge in 1937 cost him only twenty-two months. He died of a heart attack in 1976.
