On the last day of 2019, a quiet notice passed from Wuhan to the WHO China Country Office: a cluster of pneumonia cases of unknown cause, gathering in Hubei Province. By early January, forty-four patients had been reported, eleven of them severely ill, several of them traders at the Huanan Seafood market that was shuttered on the first of the year for cleaning. The causal agent was not yet named. No one yet knew what those few lines would become. This is the chart of that first warning, and its signature is sober and prophetic.
The Sun sits in Capricorn, Saturn's own sign of duty, authority and consequence: the archetype of institutions, of official reports and slow-moving structures, of what is set in motion and cannot easily be undone. It is fitting that the world's first record of this began as a bureaucratic notice, formal and understated.
The Moon rests in Pisces, the most watery and boundless of signs, a sponge tuned to the collective unconscious. Here it reads as the sign of contagion without borders, of hospitals and the sick, of a grief and dread that would soon flood every nation on Earth.
