There is a piercing, penetrating quality to C. V. Raman, the mind that could look at the blue of the Mediterranean and refuse the accepted answer. That is his Scorpio Sun: the eagle, the phoenix, power that works through the depths of the mind rather than the surface, forever probing what lies beneath. Born in 1888 to a Tamil Brahmin family, he was a prodigy who topped his Madras degree at sixteen and never stopped digging, until in 1928 he uncovered the scattering of light that bears his name, the Raman effect, winning the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics as the first Asian laureate in any science. With this Sun in the first house, the most uncensored and radiant of placements, he was born to be seen and to shine simply by being wholly, unapologetically himself, right down to smashing his Bharat Ratna medallion in protest.
His Moon in Capricorn was the stoic, dutiful psyche, the unspoiled worker who grew up fast and found peace in discipline and rigour. Placed in the exalted third house, that Moon poured feeling into words, ideas and communication, fuelling the journals and institutes he founded. His Libra Ascendant lent a balanced, gracious mask, the Venusian seeker of symmetry and just proportion.
