Maria Callas

Maria Callas was born to be seen, and she knew it in her marrow. With her Sun in the first house, the most uncensored place a Sun can sit, she was the star itself, the sun god walking, someone the world would hand to the stage without her ever having to beg for it. That Sun burned in Sagittarius, the jovial philosopher-explorer: a Greek soul born in New York, restless, exacting, forever chasing the big picture of an art form she would remake in her own image. As La Divina she gave Norma, Tosca and Lucia di Lammermoor a dramatic truth no one had dared before, first in wartime Athens under Elvira de Hidalgo, then at La Scala, Verona and the Metropolitan.

Her Moon sat in Virgo up in the tenth house, on the very throne of the chart, so her feelings were lived out in full public view and her nourishment came through relentless, meticulous service to the music. She could not hide what she felt, and the whole world watched her feel it. Behind it all, a Scorpio rising: the phoenix, all or nothing, rising and rising again. She died in Paris in 1977, but La Divina keeps returning.
