Niels Bohr was the Danish physicist who taught us to hold two truths at once. Born in Copenhagen in 1885, he built the Bohr model of the atom, with its electrons leaping between discrete energy levels, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. His deepest idea was complementarity: that a thing may be honestly described by contradictory properties, wave and particle both, and that principle governed his physics and his philosophy alike. He founded what is now the Niels Bohr Institute, mentored a generation including Heisenberg, helped refugees flee Nazism, joined the Manhattan Project, then spent his later years pleading for international cooperation on nuclear energy.
How fitting that both his Sun and his Moon sit in Libra, the sign of the Scale. Libra shines by weighing two sides, seeing the balance and symmetry in everything, and complementarity is nothing less than Libra written into the atom itself. This doubled Venusian signature made him the great mediator and diplomat of physics, fair-minded and harmony-seeking. Both luminaries rest in the ninth house of philosophy and higher wisdom, the born philosopher-professor, and with jolly Sagittarius rising he wore the Jupiterian mask of the global sage, the wandering teacher whose reach spanned the whole world.
