Wilbur Wright

Wilbur Wright was a pioneer among pioneers, the man who taught humanity to fly. Raised in Dayton, Ohio, he shared with his younger brother Orville a lifelong hunger for mechanics and flight, a passion the two of them fed through self-education and relentless hands-on experiment. In 1896 they opened a bicycle sales and repair shop, and its earnings quietly bankrolled a dream. Studying the principles of lift and control, testing and retesting, they arrived at their moment on the 17th of December 1903, when at Kitty Hawk Wilbur watched the Wright Flyer carry the first successful powered flight, 120 feet in twelve seconds. He and Orville patented their designs, founded the Wright Company, and dazzled the world with public demonstrations before typhoid fever took him in 1912 at just forty-five.
