September 11 attacks

The September 11 attacks were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of 11 September 2001, the deadliest act of terrorism in human history. Nineteen hijackers seized four commercial airliners. Two were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, which collapsed within hours; a third struck the Pentagon; the fourth crashed in a Pennsylvania field after its passengers fought back. Nearly three thousand people were killed, and the attacks set in motion the decades-long global war on terror, the invasion of Afghanistan, and eventually the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.
