Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie rose from a poor Scottish weaver's son to the richest man in America, and then, remarkably, gave almost all of it away. Born in Dunfermline and carried to Pittsburgh at twelve, he began as a humble telegrapher, moved into railroads, bridges and oil, and built the Carnegie Steel Company that he sold to J. P. Morgan in 1901 for a sum that seeded U.S. Steel. His 1889 essay "The Gospel of Wealth" argued that the rich hold a duty to enrich society, and he lived it, giving roughly 90 percent of his fortune to libraries, universities, science and world peace: Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Mellon, the Peace Palace at The Hague and thousands of free libraries.
