Johann Sebastian Bach

Born into a long line of German musicians in 1685, orphaned by ten and raised by an elder brother, he grew into the towering figure of the late Baroque, the mind behind the Brandenburg Concertos, the Cello Suites, the Goldberg Variations, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Through decades of church and court posts in Weimar, Kothen and finally as cantor at St Thomas's in Leipzig, he poured out cantatas, fugues and chorales without pause.
