Space Shuttle Challenger disaster

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster is the morning America's reach for the stars turned to grief. On 28 January 1986, seventy-three seconds into mission STS-51-L, the orbiter broke apart nearly fourteen kilometres above the Atlantic off Cape Canaveral, killing all seven aboard, among them schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, whose Teacher in Space flight was being watched live in classrooms across the country. The cause lay in the O-ring seals of the right solid rocket booster, stiffened by record-low cold, breached at liftoff; a hot jet of gas tore into the external tank and aerodynamic forces did the rest. The Rogers Commission later found that known warnings had gone unheeded.

The chart of the moment is achingly apt. An Aquarius Sun in the tenth house is the ego of the collective placed at the very throne of public visibility, humanity's tribe watching its own boldest project at high noon. A Virgo Moon in the fifth binds the psyche to creation and to children, to the classrooms tuned in, its perfectionist eye haunted afterward by the small detail overlooked. And a Taurus Ascendant, the steady bull who dreads sudden change, met exactly the shock it cannot control. Seven names, and a hard lesson in listening.
