USA's First Covid Positive Test Confirmed

This is the chart of a moment, not a person: the first laboratory-confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the United States. On the 20th of January 2020, the CDC announced that samples taken two days earlier in Washington state had returned positive, and on the very same day it activated its Emergency Operations Center. A single test result marked the quiet threshold of a global catastrophe, the point at which an outbreak on the far side of the world became a matter of American soil.

The Sun of this moment stands in Aquarius, the sign of the collective, of the tribe and the masses of humanity, the sign whose decisions can change the lives of millions. It is a fitting signature for an event that was, from its first breath, about the whole of society at once, and about the machinery of science and government (the Aquarian institutions) awakening to respond. The Moon rides in Sagittarius, the wanderer's sign of open roads, foreign lands and border-crossing movement, the very freedom of travel through which the contagion would spread across the globe. Together they stamp the moment with its true character: a boundless, collective, world-altering turning point.
