Frank Lucas

Frank Lucas built one of the most destructive heroin operations in American history, and the wealth he amassed came directly from addiction, death and the ruin of Harlem communities in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His innovation, if it can be called that, was ruthless supply-chain control: he cut out the Italian Mafia middlemen and bought heroin directly from the Golden Triangle in Southeast Asia, boasting he smuggled it in the coffins of dead American servicemen, a claim his associate later denied. Convicted of trafficking in 1976 and sentenced to seventy years, he became an informant, had his sentence cut, and after further drug convictions was released in 1991. He died in 2019.
