Lucky Luciano

Lucky Luciano, born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily in 1897, became the chief architect of organised crime in the United States, and the harm he engineered was vast and deliberate. Rising through the Five Points Gang, he abolished the old "boss of bosses" title after the bloody Castellammarese War and built the Commission in 1931, a governing board that industrialised extortion, narcotics and coerced prostitution. In 1936 he was convicted of running a compulsory prostitution racket and sentenced to thirty to fifty years; his 1946 commutation and deportation to Italy followed his wartime dealings with naval intelligence. He died in Naples in 1962.
