Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was the great-souled one, the lawyer who disarmed an empire with nothing but truth and refusal. His Sun in Libra tells much of the story: this is the hero placed in Venus's Scale, the one who shines through fairness, mediation and the ceaseless weighing of justice. Trained at the Inner Temple in London and called to the bar at twenty-two, he became the archetypal Libran advocate, then discovered in South Africa that his true courtroom was the conscience of nations. Falling in the second house of values and self-worth, that Sun anchored his identity not in money but in principle: the dhoti, the spinning wheel, the plain food, worth built entirely within.

His Leo Ascendant is the mask of the regal lion who holds the torch for those behind him, and the world duly turned when Bapu entered the room. Yet his Moon in Leo lies in the twelfth house, the realm of sacrifice, service and the collective soul: a heart that mothered a whole people through fasting and self-surrender. He led the 1930 Salt March, was jailed for years, and was assassinated in 1948 while pleading for peace between Hindus and Muslims. His birthday is now the International Day of Nonviolence.
