Ted Kaczynski

Ted Kaczynski, known to the public as the Unabomber, was an American mathematician who became a domestic terrorist. A childhood prodigy, he abandoned an academic career in 1969 and retreated in 1971 to a remote Montana cabin without electricity or running water. From that isolation he waged a mail-bombing campaign between 1978 and 1995 that killed three people and injured twenty-three others, targeting individuals he associated with modern technology. He forced newspapers to publish his 35,000-word manifesto, and it was his own brother who recognised the prose and reported him. Arrested in 1996, he pleaded guilty in 1998, received eight consecutive life sentences, and died by suicide in prison in 2023.
