Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo poured the whole suffering of humanity onto the page, and no placement explains that impulse better than his Pisces Sun, the twelfth and most compassionate archetype, the old soul who takes on the world's pain and shines through empathy, imagination and boundless creative feeling. That Sun sits in the fourth house of home, homeland and lineage, so his heart and identity were rooted in France herself; he became a national conscience, and his love of country ran so deep it eventually earned him the Pantheon. Across more than sixty years he wrote in every form: The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, the vast moral cathedral of Les Miserables, the poetry of Les Contemplations, plus more than four thousand drawings and a lifelong campaign against the death penalty. His Moon in Sagittarius gave him a restless, freedom-loving, philosophising psyche, the mind of a teacher and preacher whose ideas would reach a global mass; in the second house it tied his sense of worth to his values, and his convictions carried him from youthful royalist to passionate republican, deputy and senator, even into years of exile. Scorpio rising lent him the intense, all-or-nothing gaze of one who sees through people and writes their darkest depths. A saintly imagination, a fighter's spine.
