Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse carried a voice that seemed borrowed from an older, wounded world, a deep contralto that could make soul, jazz and rhythm and blues feel newly bruised and true. Her Sun sits in Virgo, and this is the placement of one who shines not by chasing the limelight but by mastering a craft: the perfectionist who is her own worst critic, endlessly analysing, polishing, unwilling to hand over anything unfinished. That Virgoan devotion is written through her songwriting, from the jazz-steeped Frank in 2003 to the era-defining Back to Black in 2006. In her chart the Sun falls in the fifth house, its own creative home, the seat of charisma and self-expression, and audiences paid for that radiance: five Grammys in a single 2008 night, a Brit, two Ivor Novello Awards.

Her Moon in Capricorn tells a harder story, the tender lunar feeling forced into Saturn's sobriety, the child who grows up too fast and carries a mothering wound as stoic strength. Placed in the seventh house, that Moon lived through others, reading the room, almost never alone, prone to depending on the one beside her. She died at twenty-seven in 2011. The chart names a temperament, never a fate; the artistry remains luminous.
