Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, carried a Sun in Aries, that exalted ace of a placement, the pioneer who gets back up on the saddle no matter what the universe does to her. She was a survivor and an innovator in the truest sense: heard singing in Harlem nightclubs, signed at twenty, she went on to change the whole language of jazz, bending phrasing and tempo like an instrument until Lester Young crowned her Lady Day. That Sun falls in her second house of worth and voice, and her value was always within, something no hardship could strip away. She left a lasting mark, and the four Grammys, all posthumous, only confirmed what the world was slow to honour.

Yet her Moon in Capricorn tells the harder truth: the tender luminary in cold, dutiful Saturn's sign, the child who grew up far too fast and carried a mothering wound her whole life. Set in the twelfth house, that Moon dissolved into sacrifice, sorrow and the collective unconscious, the empath's sponge that soaks up pain and too often reaches for escape. Her Aquarius Ascendant made her a black sheep, an original who beat to her own drum. From that wound came a voice that still aches with truth.
