Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway wrote hard-boiled prose with a soft, guarded core, and the chart holds both truths at once. His Sun shines in Cancer, the sign of the mother, the crab that carries its shell everywhere; this is a deeply emotional, intuitive Sun that shines by feeling, by protecting, by nurturing beneath a guarded surface, even as the world saw only the tough adventurer. That tender Sun sits in the eleventh house, the house of tribe and network, where the hero-self gathers a circle around it: think of the Lost Generation in 1920s Paris, the expatriate community he shone within and outgrew. Yet his Moon in Capricorn is the child who grew up fast, unspoiled, stoic, dutiful, the emotional nature dropped into cold Saturnian discipline; it explains the iceberg theory itself, feeling withheld beneath a spare, controlled line. Set in the fifth house, that Moon bound his peace of mind to his creations, and his novels truly were his babies: The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, then the Nobel Prize in 1954. A Virgo Ascendant gave the perfectionist's exacting eye. A soft heart in armour, who died by his own hand in 1961.
