Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius was the philosopher on the throne, Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and the last of the Five Good Emperors who closed the long Pax Romana. Orphaned of his father at three and raised by his mother and grandfather, he was groomed for rule, adopted into the line of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, and schooled in Greek and Latin. His reign was no idyll: he fought the Parthians, held the Germanic tribes on the northern frontier through the Marcomannic Wars, and endured the Antonine Plague that emptied the Empire. Yet in the war-camps by night he wrote his Meditations, the private notebook that remains one of the great sources of Stoic wisdom.

His Sun shines in Taurus, the earthy, foundational bull: the pillar of the chart, the connoisseur of solid values and unshakeable principle. No force could beg such a soul to abandon a conviction once held, and Stoicism is exactly that patient constancy. His Moon rests in Capricorn, the stoic, unspoiled emotional nature that grew up fast and bore duty without complaint, disciplined, sober, self-contained. Earth and Saturn together: the very astrology of endurance, of a man who ruled himself before he ruled Rome.
