Biography
Park Jae-sang (Korean: 박재상, IPA: [pɐk̚.t͡ɕεsɐŋ]; born December 31, 1977), better known by his stage name Psy (싸이; /ˈsaɪ/ SY), is a South Korean rapper and singer-songwriter. Known domestically for his humorous music videos and performances and internationally for his hit single "Gangnam Style", he has received numerous accolades, including an American Music Award, ten MAMA Awards, and a World Music Award.
Psy debuted with his first studio album Psy from the Psycho World! to mixed reviews from critics, who criticized its inappropriate content. In 2010, he signed with YG Entertainment, where he released his breakthrough single "Gangnam Style" in 2012. The song and its accompanying music video became a worldwide viral phenomenon following its release; the music video became the first video on YouTube to reach 1 billion views and was the most-viewed video on YouTube for nearly five years before being surpassed by the video for "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa, and holds the record for the most days spent at the top spot. He followed this with his single "Gentleman", which was the most-viewed YouTube video in its first 24 hours at the time. In 2018, he founded his talent agency P Nation, where he released his studio album Psy 9th in 2022, supported by the lead track "That That".
Early life
Park Jae-sang was born on December 31, 1977,[2] to an affluent family in the Gangnam District of Seoul, South Korea.[3] He was born into the Milyang Park clan.[4] His father, Park Won-Ho, is the executive chairman of DI Corporation, a manufacturer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment listed on the Korea Exchange.[5] His mother, Kim Young-hee, owns several restaurants in Gangnam.[6]
Park attended Banpo (반포) Elementary and Middle Schools and Sehwa (세화) High School.[7] He disliked school and was known as the class clown. In an interview on South Korea's Seoul Broadcasting System, a former teacher of Park said: "I remember Psy making a lot of sexual jokes during class. He had such a big influence that he would drive the entire class to his jokes. I disliked him at the time, but looking back, I see that he added a great energy to the class."[8]
Park told CNN's Alina Cho that when he was 15 years old, he watched a Korean TV programme that introduced foreign pop music. One particular episode showed a concert at Wembley Stadium held by the British rock band Queen where they performed their 1975 hit single "Bohemian Rhapsody". Park said it was this concert footage that sparked his love for music.[9]
