Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes has the kind of warmth that fills a room before he sings a note, and that is the lion in him. His Sun sits in Leo, the Sun in its own domicile at full strength, the born performer with a giant heart who is here to be the centre of at least his own solar system; even in his jammies, as I like to say, it would be hard not to notice him. That golden, generous Leo charisma is exactly what leapt off the screen when a teenager posting song covers on Vine turned, almost overnight, into one of only five artists ever to debut atop the Billboard 200 before turning eighteen. Handwritten, Illuminate, Stitches, Señorita: the lion simply kept roaring, quietly and confidently, the way a strong lion never has to.

His Moon rests in Aquarius, though, and that is the surprising second note: a psyche fused with the wider tribe of humanity, the higher octave of Mercury, independent and a little detached, forever craving freedom even inside all that adoration. It is the part of him that writes candidly about anxiety and the loneliness of fame in In My Blood. Leo fire that longs to belong to everyone, Aquarian coolness that needs to belong to no one: a heart-on-sleeve star with a wave of solitude running underneath.
