First Death of Covid-19 Announced

This is the chart of a moment rather than a person: the eleventh of January, 2020, when Chinese state media announced the first known death from the illness that would become COVID-19. The man who died was sixty-one, a regular customer at the market in Wuhan, and news of his passing came just before one of China's largest travel holidays, when hundreds of millions cross the country. On the same day the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus was shared with the world. The Sun of this moment stands in Capricorn, Saturn's sign of structure, authority, mortality and the sober weight of institutions; a fitting signature for an announcement issued by the state, a moment where governments, ministries and the machinery of public health first took the measure of what was coming. The Moon sits in Cancer, in its own home, the double-whammy Moon of the mother, the family, the homeland and the collective heart. Here is the emotional register of that day: a private grief within one family opening onto a vast maternal fear for home and nation. Capricorn's grim officialdom married to Cancer's tender dread. In hindsight, the archetypal fingerprint of a threshold the whole world would soon cross.
