Helena Blavatsky

Few figures divided their age as sharply as Helena Blavatsky, hailed by devotees as an enlightened sage and dismissed by critics as a charlatan. Born in 1831 into a Russian aristocratic family in what is now Dnipro, largely self-taught, she wandered widely and claimed encounters with hidden Masters of the Ancient Wisdom in Tibet. In 1875 she co-founded the Theosophical Society in New York, and through Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine she framed Theosophy as the synthesis of science, religion and philosophy, seeding much of what would become the modern New Age. Public accusations of fraudulent phenomena dogged her throughout.

Her Sun in Leo in the second house is the lion who shines through what she values and builds; here is the magnetic, dramatic self-made authority who made her own worth the foundation of a movement. Her Moon in Libra in the fourth house, that beautiful Venusian moon at the base of the chart, seeks peace through harmony, ideas and a spiritual home. Her Cancer Ascendant wore the lunar mask of the intuitive matriarch who knows how to move people. Prophet or performer, Blavatsky remains one of the most consequential mystics the West produced.
