Lee Sun-kyun

Lee Sun-kyun had the kind of soulful, unknowable presence that the camera loved and could never quite pin down, and his Pisces Sun is the heart of it. Pisces is the twelfth and final archetype, the wisest and most spiritual, the old soul who shines in the mystical and the tender; these are the walking, talking psychics of the human condition, sponges for every energy in the room. That quality gave his work its distinctive ache, from his beloved turn in the drama Pasta in 2010 to his indelible role as the smooth, quietly fraying patriarch in Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, the Academy Award winner that carried him and his castmates to a Screen Actors Guild Award and to the world.

His Moon lived in Scorpio, the realm of Pluto and Hades, calm and composed on the surface with an emotional volcano beneath: the phoenix that dies and is reborn, feeling everything at its extreme. It lent his performances their smouldering depth and their sense of a man carrying more than he showed. He trained at the Korea National University of Arts, graduating in 1994, married actress Jeon Hye-jin, and raised two sons. His death in December 2023 was a profound loss.
