Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, known and loved as Madiba, was a survivor and a healer in the truest astrological sense, and few charts wear that story as plainly as his. His Sun shines in Cancer, the most emotional and protective of luminaries, the one here to shine as a nurturer and mother-figure to a whole people, guarding something tender behind the crab's shell. That Sun falls in the eighth house, the Scorpionic realm of death and rebirth, the domain of the phoenix, and his life became exactly that: twenty-seven years buried in the darkness of Robben Island, Pollsmoor and Victor Verster, and a rising from those ashes to become the first black president of South Africa in 1994. His Moon in Scorpio, the emotional volcano that dies and is reborn, sits in the twelfth house of sacrifice and the collective soul, the placement of the one who heals through giving himself away. Where such intensity could have curdled into vengeance, Mandela chose the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and racial reconciliation instead, transmuting the venom into forgiveness. His Sagittarius Ascendant lent the warm, larger-than-life mask of the wandering preacher-philosopher, the elder statesman with the famous smile who declined a second term and gave his final years to fighting poverty and HIV. A Nobel laureate, and Father of a Nation.
