Susan Kohner

Susan Kohner carried the intensity of a double Scorpio, Sun and Ascendant both wearing the mask of the phoenix and the serpent, and she poured it into one of the most quietly devastating screen performances of her era. With the Sun in the first house, she was the star in the most literal astrological sense, born to be seen and to shine simply by being herself; the Scorpio depth gave that shine a piercing, all-or-nothing charge. Daughter of Mexican actress Lupita Tovar and Bohemian producer Paul Kohner, she made her name playing Sarah Jane in Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life (1959), a light-skinned Black woman passing as white, a role of transformation and hidden identity that only a Scorpio could inhabit so fully. It won her a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.

Her Moon in Libra was a beautiful, Venusian moon, tuned to harmony, fairness and grace, and it sat in the twelfth house of the unknowable and the self-sacrificing. Fittingly, at the height of her powers she chose to dissolve the spotlight: marrying designer John Weitz in 1964, she retired to raise a family. Her two sons, Chris and Paul, became filmmakers, and her rebirth continued through them.
